Liberia airport (LIR) puts you 30 minutes to 2.5 hours from the Guanacaste beaches, and within reach of Rincón de la Vieja, Río Celeste and Arenal. The trick is pacing: Guanacaste looks small on a map, but the drives add up. Each itinerary below gives a short day-by-day outline, the total time you'll spend on the road, and a few real trips Anywhere travelers have taken with the same shape. They're a starting point, not a package: move the days around to fit your flights.

Drive times come from our Guanacaste drive times page and are typical door-to-door times in normal conditions. Add time for rain, high-season afternoons and stops.
5–7 days: one beach base, with day trips
The easiest Guanacaste trip: one hotel, no packing and unpacking, and the volcano comes to you as a day trip. It's the one I suggest for a first visit of a week or less, and for anyone landing with small kids.
- Day 1. Land at LIR and transfer to your beach: 30–45 minutes to Playas del Coco or Playa Hermosa, 30–60 minutes to the Papagayo Peninsula resorts, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 to Flamingo, 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 to Tamarindo. Sunset from the beach.
- Day 2. Beach day. In the afternoon, a sunset catamaran with snorkeling (they leave from Coco, Flamingo and Tamarindo).
- Day 3. Rincón de la Vieja: the Las Pailas trail past the bubbling mud pots, then hot springs and a volcanic mud bath. It's 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 each way from Coco, about 1 hour 30 from Flamingo or Conchal.
- Day 4. Slow day: snorkel, surf lesson, spa, or a second beach nearby.
- Day 5 (optional). Río Celeste and the Tenorio waterfall trail, about 2 hours each way from Coco. Skip it from Tamarindo (2 hours 40 to 3 hours each way).
- Day 6 or 7. Back to Liberia airport for your flight.

Why it works from LIR: the Papagayo side is only 30 to 60 minutes from the airport, so you're in the water the afternoon you land. From San José the same beaches are around 4 hours away. Getting there: Liberia airport to Playas del Coco, to Papagayo, to Flamingo and Conchal and to Tamarindo. Not sure which beach? 7–9 days: volcano and beach, in and out of Liberia
The classic Costa Rica combination, round trip from LIR. There are two ways to do it, and the difference is mostly how much time you want to spend in the car.
Arenal and a Guanacaste beach (8 days)
- Day 1. Land at LIR and drive to La Fortuna: 3 to 3.5 hours around Lake Arenal, or 2.5 to 3 hours via Bijagua and Upala. Only if you land by early afternoon; otherwise sleep near Liberia or at Rincón de la Vieja and go the next morning.
- Days 2–3. Arenal: the volcano national park trails, hanging bridges, La Fortuna waterfall, and an evening in the hot springs.
- Day 4. Down to the coast. La Fortuna to Tamarindo is 4 to 5 hours. For Coco or Hermosa it's the 3 to 3.5 hours back toward Liberia plus 30 to 45 minutes. Río Celeste is on the Bijagua road if you want to break the drive with a hike.
- Days 5–7. Beach: catamaran, snorkeling, surf lesson, or nothing at all.
- Day 8. Back to LIR, 30 minutes to 1 hour 30 depending on your beach.
Total drive time: about 7 to 10 hours in three drives. Two of them are long, so plan them in daylight.
Rincón de la Vieja and a Guanacaste beach (7 days)
- Day 1. Land at LIR and drive 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 to a lodge near Rincón de la Vieja.
- Day 2. Rincón: the Las Pailas trail, hot springs and a mud bath, and time for another outdoor activity nearby.
- Day 3. To the beach: 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 to Coco or Hermosa, about 1 hour 30 to Flamingo or Conchal, 2 to 2 hours 15 to Tamarindo.
- Days 4–6. Beach days, with Río Celeste as an optional long day out from the Coco side.
- Day 7. Back to LIR.
Total drive time: about 2.5 to 5 hours for the whole trip. You get a volcano, hot springs and a beach week with barely a long drive.
Why it works from LIR: both volcano areas are closer to Liberia than the Guanacaste beaches are to San José. Arenal is 3 to 3.5 hours from LIR, only about half an hour more than from San José, so a round trip into Liberia still works. Getting there: Liberia airport to La Fortuna and to Rincón de la Vieja. Insider tip: do the volcano first and finish on the beach. Your last drive is then the short one to the airport, not a 3-hour run from Arenal on the morning of your flight.

10–14 days: into Liberia, out of San José
With ten days or more you can add Arenal and Monteverde to a Guanacaste beach, and the smart way to do it is an open-jaw ticket: fly into one airport and home from the other. You cross the country once, instead of there and back. Here's a 12-day version starting at Liberia.
- Day 1. Land at LIR; 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 to Tamarindo, or 1 hour to 1 hour 30 to Flamingo or Conchal.
- Days 2–4. Beach days, a catamaran, and Rincón de la Vieja if you want a volcano early.
- Day 5. Inland to Bijagua, near Río Celeste: 2 hours 40 to 3 hours from Tamarindo. A night here breaks up the drive to Arenal.
- Day 6. Hike the Río Celeste waterfall trail in the morning, then continue to La Fortuna. (Liberia airport to La Fortuna via Bijagua is 2.5 to 3 hours in all.)
- Days 7–8. Arenal: volcano trails, hanging bridges, hot springs.
- Day 9. To Monteverde: 3 to 4 hours by road around the lake, or by jeep-boat-jeep across it.
- Days 10–11. Monteverde: the cloud forest reserves, hanging bridges, a night walk.
- Day 12. Monteverde to San José airport (SJO), 3 to 4 hours. With an early flight, spend the last night near the airport.
Total drive time: roughly 10 to 14 hours over the trip, in five legs, none longer than 4 hours, and no backtracking.
The reverse works just as well and is the shape most of the trips below follow: land at San José, go to Arenal (2.5 to 3 hours from SJO) and Monteverde, then come down to a Guanacaste beach and fly home from Liberia, often an hour or so from your last hotel. It saves the 4 to 5.5 hours it would take to drive from the Guanacaste beaches back to San José.
Why it works from LIR: Liberia is the Guanacaste end of the country, so it makes the beach leg short at whichever end of the trip it falls. Honeymoons and anniversaries
Couples usually want fewer moves and a better last stop. Two bases is plenty for a week: Arenal for the hot springs and the volcano views, then a resort on the Papagayo Peninsula or at Conchal or Flamingo to finish. Build in a sunset catamaran and at least one day with nothing planned. With two weeks, the loop from Liberia through Río Celeste, Arenal and Monteverde back to the coast gives you all three landscapes without an open-jaw ticket.

Families
After a flight with kids, the first transfer matters most: Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and the Papagayo Peninsula are 30 to 60 minutes from the airport, against 1 hour 15 or more for Tamarindo. Start there, keep single drives under about 3 hours, and give each base at least three nights. When to go
The dry season, December to April, has the best roads and the most sun, and it's also when flights and hotels fill up first. From May to November afternoons bring rain and the unpaved stretches (Rincón de la Vieja, the last miles into Nosara) get slower, but the landscape turns green and it's quieter. How many days do you need in Guanacaste?
Five to seven days is enough for one beach base with a volcano day trip, such as Rincón de la Vieja. Add two or three days if you want Arenal as well, and plan on 10 to 14 days to add Monteverde. Travel days count: the drive from Liberia airport to La Fortuna alone is 3 to 3.5 hours.
Can you do Arenal and a Guanacaste beach in one week?
Yes. Three nights at Arenal and three or four at the beach works, with two long drives: Liberia airport to La Fortuna is 3 to 3.5 hours, and La Fortuna to Tamarindo is 4 to 5 hours. If you'd rather drive less, swap Arenal for Rincón de la Vieja, 45 minutes to 1 hour 15 from the airport.
What's the best base in Guanacaste for day trips?
Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa or the Papagayo Peninsula. They're 30 to 60 minutes from Liberia airport, and Rincón de la Vieja is about 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 from Coco, so a volcano and hot springs day is easy. From Tamarindo the same trip is 2 to 2 hours 15 each way.
Should I fly into Liberia or San José for a 10- to 14-day trip?
If you're combining Arenal or Monteverde with a Guanacaste beach, fly into one and out of the other, so you never drive back across the country. If the whole trip is in Guanacaste, fly round trip to Liberia. See Liberia vs San José airport for the full comparison.
Can I see Río Celeste on a day trip from the beach?
From Liberia or Playas del Coco, yes: 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 from Liberia town and about 2 hours from Coco. From Tamarindo it's 2 hours 40 to 3 hours each way, so it works better as an overnight near Bijagua on the way to or from La Fortuna.
