The short answer
5 to 7 days? Pick one beach base and day-trip from it. Papagayo, Playas del Coco and Playa Hermosa are 30 to 60 minutes from Liberia airport (LIR); Flamingo, Conchal and Tamarindo about 1 to 1.5 hours.
8 days or more, or a volcano and a beach? Two bases: a couple of nights near Rincón de la Vieja or Río Celeste, then the coast.
Landing late or flying out early? Sleep near Liberia airport and head to the far beaches in daylight.
One base or two?
Here's the thing most first-time Guanacaste trips get wrong: too many hotels. Every move means packing, checking out, a drive, and checking in again, and it eats roughly half a day. Guanacaste is built for the opposite. Because Liberia airport sits so close to the coast, you can land, be at your beach in 30 minutes to 1.5 hours, and unpack once.
- One base (5 to 7 days). The easiest shape, and the one we suggest most. Pick the beach area that fits you, then add one or two day trips: Rincón de la Vieja's hot springs and mud baths, a nearby beach, a catamaran or a surf lesson. Fewer moves, more vacation.
- Two bases (8 to 10 days). Start with two or three nights in the volcano country (Rincón de la Vieja or Río Celeste), then finish on the beach, closer to the airport for your flight home. Or split the coast: a few nights on the Papagayo side and a few in Tamarindo or Nosara.
- Three bases (10 days or more). Only if you're adding Arenal or Monteverde. At that point, consider flying home from San José (see Liberia vs San José).
A good rule of thumb from our drive-time guide: up to about 1.5 hours each way makes a relaxed day trip, 2 to 3 hours each way is a long day that's better as an overnight, and anything more is a travel day.

Where to stay on the Guanacaste beaches
Guanacaste's coast runs from the sheltered bays of the Gulf of Papagayo, closest to the airport, down to the surf towns of the Nicoya Peninsula. The farther south you go, the longer the drive and the more laid-back the towns.
Papagayo Peninsula
Who it suits: honeymooners and families who want a big resort with everything on site, and anyone who'd rather not spend their first afternoon in a van. The peninsula is home to resorts such as the Four Seasons and Andaz, set on calm bays at the end of a private, gated road.
From LIR: 25 to 45 km, 30 to 60 minutes on smooth paved roads. Getting there: Liberia airport to Papagayo.
Day trips: the restaurants and boat trips of Playas del Coco, and Rincón de la Vieja via Liberia, the classic volcano day from this side of the coast. Tamarindo is 1 hour 25 to 1 hour 40 away.
Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Ocotal
Who it suits: travelers who want the beach fast and at a range of budgets. Coco is a working fishing and tourist town with shops, restaurants and bars, and the place to catch boat, snorkel and fishing trips. Playa Hermosa, just north, is calm and family-friendly. Ocotal, a few minutes south, is a small, quiet bay that's good for swimming and snorkeling, below the hilltop Ocotal Beach Resort.
From LIR: 20 to 35 km, about 30 to 45 minutes, paved all the way via Sardinal. Getting there: Liberia airport to Playas del Coco.
Day trips: Rincón de la Vieja (1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30), Tamarindo (1 hour 10 to 1 hour 20), and Río Celeste at a stretch (about 2 hours each way).
Flamingo, Conchal and Potrero
Who it suits: couples and families who want a quieter, more upscale stretch of coast without going far. Playa Conchal's shoreline is made of tiny crushed shells, with turquoise water in front. Behind it, the Reserva Conchal development has a golf course and the Westin Reserva Conchal (formerly the Paradisus Playa Conchal). Brasilito is the small village next door; Flamingo and Potrero, a few minutes north, are quieter bays with a handful of restaurants. Las Catalinas is a little farther up the coast.
From LIR: 45 to 70 km, 1 hour to 1 hour 30, paved via Belén and Huacas. Getting there: Liberia airport to Flamingo and Conchal.
Day trips: Tamarindo (about 35 minutes from Flamingo) for surf and dinner, and Rincón de la Vieja (about 1 hour 30 via Liberia).
Tamarindo
Who it suits: first-timers who like a real town, surfers and anyone learning to surf, and groups who want restaurants and nightlife within walking distance. For something quieter nearby, look at Langosta just south, Playa Grande across the estuary, or Avellanas and Hacienda Pinilla a little farther down the coast.
From LIR: 65 to 77 km, 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 (up to 2 hours in peak traffic), paved and reliable year-round. Getting there: Liberia airport to Tamarindo.
Day trips: Flamingo and Conchal (about 35 minutes) and Nosara (1 hour 30 to 2 hours). Rincón de la Vieja is 2 to 2 hours 15 each way, which is a long day; Río Celeste (2 hours 40 to 3 hours) is better as an overnight.
Nosara and Sámara
Who it suits: surfers, yoga lovers and travelers staying a week or more who want to unplug. Nosara, around Playa Guiones, is known for yoga and surfing, with hotels tucked into the forest behind the beach. Sámara, just south, is an easygoing beach town, and Playa Carrillo is next to it.
From LIR: about 100 km to Nosara, 2 to 2.5 hours, with a gravel last stretch that's rough in the rainy season (May to November). Sámara is about 105 km, 2 to 2 hours 15, paved all the way via Nicoya. Getting there: Liberia airport to Nosara · Liberia airport to Sámara.
Day trips: Nosara and Sámara from each other (30 minutes to 1 hour on gravel) and Tamarindo (1 hour 30 to 2 hours). Rincón de la Vieja is 2 hours 45 to 3 hours away, so split it with a night near Liberia instead.
Insider tip: Nosara and Sámara are the two beach bases where your landing time really matters. It's dark by about 6 p.m. all year, and I'd rather you did that last gravel stretch into Nosara in daylight. If your flight lands mid-afternoon or later, sleep near the airport and drive down in the morning.

Where to stay near Rincón de la Vieja and Río Celeste
Inland, the flat, sunny coastal plain climbs into forested volcano country. It's cooler, greener and a real contrast to the beaches, and it's the best second base in Guanacaste.
Rincón de la Vieja foothills
Who it suits: hikers, families who want an adventure day (canopy lines, ATV tours) and anyone who wants to soak in volcanic hot springs. Several lodges sit on old haciendas at the edge of the national park, such as Hacienda Guachipelín, which has its own hot springs, Buena Vista del Rincón, Borinquen Thermal Resort and Hotel Rincón de la Vieja.
From LIR: 35 to 40 km, 45 minutes to 1 hour 15. The road is paved to Curubandé, then about 15 km of unpaved road, slower in the rainy season. Getting there: Liberia airport to Rincón de la Vieja.
Day trips: the park's Las Pailas trails with their bubbling mud pots, the hot springs and mud baths nearby (compare them in our hot springs and mud baths guide), Liberia town (30 to 45 minutes), and a beach day on the Papagayo side (1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30). Río Celeste and Bijagua
Who it suits: nature lovers who want rainforest, wildlife and the famous sky-blue river and waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park, and travelers on their way from the beach to Arenal. Stay in Bijagua for restaurants and a small-town feel, or near the park entrance to be first on the trail. Lodges include Río Celeste Hideaway, Tenorio Lodge and Celeste Mountain Lodge.
From LIR: 90 to 105 km, 1 hour 30 to 2 hours, paved via Cañas and Bijagua, with potholes after Bijagua. A 4x4 helps in the rainy season. Getting there: there's no separate transfer to Río Celeste, but our Liberia airport to La Fortuna route can go via Bijagua.
Day trips: the Río Celeste trail itself, Liberia (1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30) and, the next day, on to La Fortuna and Arenal. From Tamarindo, Río Celeste is 2 hours 40 to 3 hours each way, which is why a night here beats a day trip.
Hotels near Liberia airport and in Liberia town
Most travelers go straight to the beach, but a night near the airport is the smart move in three cases:
- You land late. Clearing immigration and customs takes 30 to 90 minutes, sometimes more on high-season weekends, and it's dark by about 6 p.m. If you land mid-afternoon or later and your base is 2 hours or more away (Nosara, Sámara, Río Celeste, La Fortuna, Monteverde), sleep near the airport and go in the morning.
- You fly out early. The airport asks you to arrive 3 hours before an international flight. A morning flight from Nosara or Río Celeste means a pre-dawn start; a last night in Liberia doesn't.
- You want a cheap volcano base. Liberia town is 30 to 45 minutes from the Las Pailas entrance to Rincón de la Vieja and 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 from Río Celeste.
Next to the terminal: the Hilton Garden Inn Guanacaste Airport is across the road from the airport, about a kilometer away, and runs an airport shuttle. It's the easiest choice for a late arrival or an early flight.
In and around Liberia town (12 km, 15 to 20 minutes from the airport): Guanacaste's capital, known as the White City, has everything from simple family-run hotels to places with pools and gardens, such as Hotel Las Espuelas on the Inter-American Highway just south of town, plus supermarkets and local restaurants.
The quickest beach option: if you'd rather wake up by the sea, Playas del Coco, Playa Hermosa and Ocotal are only about 30 minutes from the airport, so even a late-afternoon landing gets you to the beach before dark on most days.
Insider tip: when friends ask me about a late landing, I look at two numbers: the landing time and the drive. If landing plus 1.5 hours for customs plus the drive puts you on the road after 6 p.m., I book them a night by the airport or in Coco and a morning transfer.
