What is Playa Flamingo like?

Playa Flamingo is a crescent of soft white sand, nearly a mile long, that can take on a pale pink tint in the right light. Buttonwood and other shade trees line the back of the beach, the water in front is usually calm, and because the beach faces west you get the sun setting straight into the ocean.

Flamingo was one of the first Costa Rican beaches to draw international visitors, and it's still one of the most upscale. The hills around the bay are covered in private homes, condos and hotels, and there's no real village center, just a small plaza with ATMs and convenience stores, a few beachfront restaurants and the marina. It's quiet in the evenings; for nightlife you'll head to Brasilito, Potrero or Tamarindo.

It's also the middle of a cluster of beaches. Playa Potrero and Playa Penca, to the north, are calm, darker-sand bays; Brasilito and Playa Conchal, with its crushed-shell sand, are a few minutes south.

Is it safe to swim at Playa Flamingo?

Flamingo is one of the better swimming beaches in Guanacaste. The bay is wide, the break is soft, and most days the water is calm enough for young kids to paddle. A few things still apply, as on any Costa Rican beach:

There are no lifeguards, so swim with someone and keep an eye on children in the water.
Conditions change after storms, when the waves and currents pick up. If the sea looks rough, wait for another day.
If a rip current pulls you out, don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the shore until you're out of it, then swim back in.

Street parking along the beach road isn't guarded, so don't leave bags or valuables in the car while you swim.

Insider tip: Flamingo's sunsets are the reason I send couples here. Walk the beach in the late afternoon, then have dinner at one of the restaurants overlooking the bay. In the dry season the sun drops almost exactly into the ocean in front of you.

Where to stay near Playa Flamingo

Flamingo and the beaches around it suit different trips:

Couples: the hillside homes, condos and hotels above the bay, for the views and the sunsets, or a place right on the beach so you can walk out for a swim.
Families: a beachfront hotel or a condo within walking distance of the sand. Flamingo's calm water and shade trees make an easy everyday beach, and Potrero, next door, is quieter still.
Independent and value-minded travelers: Brasilito and Potrero have simpler places to stay and local restaurants, a few minutes from Flamingo's beach.
If you want a town with nightlife: stay in Tamarindo, about 35 minutes south, and come to Flamingo for the day.

Things to do and day trips from Flamingo

From the marina: sunset sails and catamaran trips, snorkeling, sportfishing and diving. Divers head to the Catalina Islands, known for manta rays from December to April.
Playa Conchal (a few minutes): crushed-shell sand, clear water and snorkeling from the shore.
Rincón de la Vieja (about 1 hour 30 minutes): volcano trails, mud pots, waterfalls and the hot springs and mud baths nearby. See volcanoes and national parks.
Potrero, Penca and Las Catalinas: calm bays and a small beach town a little farther up the coast, for a change of beach.
Playa Grande (from October 20 to February 15): guided night tours to see leatherback turtles nesting, beyond Tamarindo.
Tamarindo (about 35 minutes): shops, restaurants, the estuary boat tour and, if you want to try, a first surf lesson.

When is the best time to visit Playa Flamingo?

December to April is the dry season, with the most sunshine and the best sunsets. It's also the busiest time, and from about November to March the Papagayo winds can make afternoons breezy. Christmas to New Year and Semana Santa (Easter week) are the most crowded weeks. Humpback whales pass along this coast from December to early April, and again from late July to November, though sightings are less reliable here than on the southern Pacific.

May to November is the green season: afternoon rain, green hills, quieter beaches and usually sunny mornings. September and October are the wettest months, and some businesses close or shorten their hours. See the best time to visit Guanacaste.

Flamingo is 45 to 60 km from Liberia airport, 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes on paved roads: west on Highway 21 through Belén, then via Huacas to the coast.
