Liberia Airport & Guanacaste FAQ

Not reliably. The Uber, DiDi and InDrive apps work in Costa Rica, but ride-hailing is still not a legal, regulated service. The bill to regulate it (expediente 23.736) was back before the full Legislative Assembly in August 2026 and had not yet had its first vote. App drivers can be fined at the terminal, so pickups tend to happen out in the parking lots, and rides to the beaches are hard to get. A pre-booked transfer or shuttle, a licensed airport taxi or a rental car are the dependable options.

Yes. Licensed airport taxis wait at the rank just outside the terminal exit. The airport recommends using only authorized transport, which you can recognize by official credentials and company uniforms. Agree on the fare before you get in. Taxis work well for Liberia town (12 km, 15 to 20 minutes) and the nearest beaches.

Usually 30 to 90 minutes from the gate to the curb. On high-season weekends (December to April), when several flights land in the early afternoon, it can take 1.5 to 2.5 hours. Liberia is generally quicker than San José.

Yes, US$29 per person, and most commercial airline tickets already include it. Charter tickets usually don't. If yours doesn't, pay at the Banco de Costa Rica desk in the terminal lobby before check-in.

Yes. The PURA Lounge opened in 2026 on the departures level. It's open 9:00 to 17:00 daily, with showers, food and a bar. Priority Pass and LoungeKey are accepted, and anyone can buy a day pass.

Yes. There are ATMs in the arrivals and departures areas, currency exchange, and Kölbi, Claro and Liberty kiosks that sell local SIM cards. Wi-Fi in the terminal is free. US dollars are widely accepted in Guanacaste.

3 hours before an international flight and 1 hour before a domestic one, as the airport advises. The busiest time is late morning to mid-afternoon on high-season Saturdays and Sundays. If you're returning a rental car to an off-site lot, allow an extra 20 to 30 minutes for the shuttle.

No. Liberia, Costa Rica, has one airport, LIR, 12 km west of town. People often confuse it with Liberia, the country in West Africa, whose main airport is Roberts International (ROB) near Monrovia. Costa Rica's other major international airport is San José (SJO).

Yes, for Guanacaste. It has one modern, compact terminal and handled a record 1,973,831 passengers in 2025, about a third of San José's traffic, so lines are usually shorter. Most beach hotels are 30 minutes to 2 hours away. Read the full Liberia airport guide.

There are 5 ways: a pre-booked private transfer, a shared shuttle, a licensed airport taxi, a rental car, or (for Liberia town only) the public bus, which runs about every 30 minutes from 5:00 a.m. and costs about US$1. Uber isn't a dependable option (see above). Compare them on our transportation page.

For one or two people, usually yes. Shared shuttles charge per seat: one large operator listed about US$30 per person from LIR to Tamarindo and US$50 to Nosara in September 2026. Taxis and private transfers charge per vehicle, so for a family or group of 3 or more the price per person often comes out about even, and you go straight to your door.

A shared shuttle is the budget choice, but it leaves at fixed times and stops at several hotels. For example, the shared LIR–Nosara van leaves at 9:00 and 15:00 and takes about 3 hours, compared with 2 to 2.5 hours direct. A taxi is simplest for short hops. A private transfer is booked ahead for your arrival, takes only your group and goes direct, which suits families, late arrivals and long drives.

Rent a car if you want to explore on your own schedule. International brands have desks in the terminal, and local companies meet you outside and take you by shuttle to their lot. Hire a driver if you'd rather not drive after a flight, you're landing in the afternoon, or you're heading far: it's dark by about 6 p.m. all year, and roads to Nosara or Santa Teresa are unlit, with rough unpaved stretches. Yes. With an Anywhere private transfer, up to an hour of stops is included, for example a supermarket run for your rental, cold drinks or a lunch break. Shared shuttles follow a set route with several hotel drop-offs.

About 65 to 77 km, typically 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes on paved roads (up to 2 hours in peak traffic). Playas del Coco is about 30 minutes away, Playa Flamingo 1 hour to 1 hour 15, Sámara 2 to 2 hours 15, and Nosara 2 to 2.5 hours. See all drive times from LIR.

It's appreciated, not required. About 10% is the usual tip for private shuttle drivers and taxi drivers. Many travelers give more after a long drive or extra help with luggage and stops.

Yes, in private vehicles. Costa Rican law requires an approved child seat or booster for children under 12 who are shorter than 1.45 m (4 ft 9 in). Taxis and public buses are exempt. When you book any transfer or rental car, say which seats you need and give your children's ages.

Legal tourist transport in Costa Rica needs a permit from the Consejo de Transporte Público (CTP), registration with the Costa Rica Tourism Board (ICT) and commercial insurance. Ask your company to confirm it has them. Anywhere drivers are safe, friendly, English-speaking and credentialed.

Fly into Liberia (LIR) if your trip is mainly Guanacaste: most beach hotels are 30 minutes to 2 hours away, compared with roughly 4 to 5.5 hours by road from San José. San José (SJO) is the bigger airport, with more than 6.4 million passengers in 2025, and it's the better choice for the Central Valley, the Caribbean coast and the southern Pacific. Yes. SANSA flies LIR to San José in about 50 minutes, with up to 8 flights a day in season, and runs daily 30-minute flights to Nosara. It also flies about 4 times a week to Cóbano (ACO), the airstrip for Santa Teresa, which takes 4.5 to 6 hours by road.

December to April, the dry season, is the most reliable time for sunny beach days, and December to March are the driest months. May to November is the green season: afternoon showers, green landscapes and fewer visitors, but unpaved roads to Nosara, Rincón de la Vieja and Santa Teresa get harder.

Generally yes, with normal precautions. The US State Department rates Costa Rica Level 2, "exercise increased caution" (renewed in April 2026), mainly because of crime. For visitors, the most common problems are break-ins to rental cars, theft on beaches and vacation-rental burglaries. Never leave bags in a parked car, keep valuables off the beach and don't walk dark beaches at night. The biggest natural risk is rip currents.

Yes. Guanacaste has some of Costa Rica's calmest swimming beaches, including Playa Hermosa, Playa Panamá, Ocotal, Potrero, Conchal, Sámara and Carrillo. Most beaches have no lifeguards, though, and rip currents cause most drownings in Costa Rica. Stay out of the water when a red flag is up, swim with others, and if a current pulls you out, swim parallel to the shore until you're free.

5 to 7 days is a good minimum for one beach base plus a volcano or hot springs day. Visitors arriving at Liberia airport in 2025 stayed 9 nights on average. With 10 days or more, add a second base or continue to Arenal or Monteverde, 2.5 to 3.5 hours away.

Its Pacific beaches and dry-season sunshine, its sabanero (cowboy) ranching culture, and its tropical dry forest. The Guanacaste Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, protects the largest area of dry forest between Mexico and Panama. The Nicoya Peninsula is one of the world's five Blue Zones, known for long-lived residents. The guanacaste tree is Costa Rica's national tree.

As a stopover, yes. Guanacaste's capital, nicknamed the White City, is 15 to 20 minutes from the airport. It's handy for a night before an early flight or as a base for Rincón de la Vieja. Most visitors spend their trip at the beaches. See the Liberia map.

Yes. The beach is made of tiny crushed shells, the water is usually calm and clear, and there's good snorkeling on a reef close to shore at the east end, best at low tide in the dry season. Unless you're staying at the resort behind the beach, you park in Brasilito and walk 15 to 20 minutes along the sand. It's 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 from the airport.

Yes, if you want an upscale, quieter beach. About a mile of white sand curves around a bay that is usually calm enough for swimming and for kids, though currents can change after storms. The marina is the base for catamaran and sportfishing trips. It's 1 hour to 1 hour 15 from the airport.

Yes, for calm water and quiet. This Blue Flag beach on the Gulf of Papagayo sits in a sheltered bay that's good for swimming, paddleboarding and kids, and it's known for its sunsets. It's only about 30 minutes from Liberia airport.

Yes, if you want a lively beach town. Tamarindo is Guanacaste's busiest surf town, with surf schools, restaurants and nightlife. Next door, Las Baulas National Marine Park protects a key nesting beach for leatherback turtles, whose season runs from about October to February. Don't swim near the estuary mouth, where crocodiles live. It's 1 hour 15 to 1 hour 30 from the airport.

Yes, especially for families. Sámara is a relaxed town on a wide bay sheltered by an offshore reef, so the water is usually gentle and good for swimming, kayaking and beginner surf lessons. It's about 2 to 2 hours 15 from Liberia airport on paved roads.

For most beach trips, the Pacific. Guanacaste is dry from December to April, has sunsets over the ocean, calm swimming bays and the most hotels and resorts. The Caribbean coast is greener, less developed and wetter for most of the year, with its driest weather usually from about August to October.

The park's visitor trails are open, but the volcano is active. On July 24, 2026, after 38 phreatic (steam-driven) eruptions since July 2, scientists raised its alert from level 2 to level 3 ("caution"). The trail to the active crater is closed. The Las Pailas sector, with its mud pots and fumaroles, and the waterfall trails stayed open. Check the park's status the week you go.

Walk the 3 km Las Pailas loop (about 2 hours with stops) past boiling mud pots and steam vents, hike to La Cangreja waterfall (enter before noon), then soak in hot springs and try a volcanic mud bath. Private ranches around the park also offer ziplining and horseback riding. Las Pailas is open Tuesday to Sunday, 8:00 to 15:00, and tickets are sold online only. At Río Negro hot springs (Hacienda Guachipelín, about 40 minutes from Liberia), staff give you fresh volcanic mud taken from the ground. You spread a thin layer on your face and body, let it dry completely, and rinse off in the river or the showers. Then you soak in 10 thermal pools that range from 37 to 40 °C (98 to 104 °F). It's open daily 9:00 to 18:00, and you buy tickets in advance.

Yes. Wear a swimsuit, preferably an old, dark one, because the mud can stain light fabric. Bring a change of clothes for the ride back. Río Negro has changing rooms and lockers, and a towel is provided.

At Río Negro, the mud is natural volcanic mud and staff hand out fresh mud. You rinse it off in the river or the showers before getting into the thermal pools, which are filled with naturally heated mineral water.
