What is Playa Hermosa like?

Playa Hermosa is a wide cove about 2 km long, framed by dry-forest hills that turn gold in the dry season and green in the rains. The sand is dark gray and volcanic, the water is calm, and the beach faces west, so you get a full view of the sun going down. It holds a Blue Flag, Costa Rica's award for clean beaches and water.

There's no town center. Hermosa is a quiet community of beachside and hilltop condos, small hotels and a handful of beachfront restaurants and bars, with a small supermarket on the main road. It rarely gets crowded, and in September and October it's especially peaceful. Playas del Coco, about 15 minutes south, has the supermarkets, ATMs, restaurants and nightlife.

One thing to know when you search: Costa Rica has more than one Playa Hermosa. This is the Guanacaste one, near Liberia airport. The surf beach of the same name is near Jacó, on the central Pacific.

Is it safe to swim at Playa Hermosa?

Yes, it's one of the calmest and safest swimming beaches in Guanacaste. The cove is sheltered from the open Pacific, so the waves are usually gentle. Still, keep the usual rules:

• There are no lifeguards, so swim with someone and watch children in the water.
• If a rip current pulls you out, swim parallel to the shore until you're free, then swim back in.
• The water can feel cool from about December to March, when the Papagayo winds pull colder water up from the deep.

Hermosa isn't a snorkeling beach: the dark sand makes the water look murky from the shore. For snorkeling, take a boat trip around the gulf, or spend a day at Playa Conchal.

Where to stay near Playa Hermosa

• Families with young kids: a condo or small hotel within walking distance of the sand, so you can go back and forth for naps and meals. The calm water makes Hermosa an easy everyday beach.
• Couples: a hilltop condo or hotel with a view over the bay and the sunset, or somewhere right on the beach.
• If you want restaurants and nightlife on foot: stay in Playas del Coco and come to Hermosa to swim.
• If you want a big resort: look at Playa Panamá, the next bay north, or the Papagayo Peninsula beyond it.

Things to do and day trips from Playa Hermosa

• On the water: kayaking and paddleboarding from the beach, and boat trips around the Gulf of Papagayo for snorkeling, fishing and beach hopping.
• Diving from Playas del Coco (about 15 minutes): the Catalina Islands, known for manta rays from December to April, and the Bat Islands, known for bull sharks, from May to November.
• Rincón de la Vieja (about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes): volcano trails, mud pots, waterfalls and the hot springs and mud baths, the classic day trip from this side of the coast. See volcanoes and national parks.

• Río Celeste (about 2 hours each way): the sky-blue river and waterfall in Tenorio Volcano National Park, a long day.
• Tamarindo (a little over an hour): a lively beach town with restaurants, shops and, if you want to try, a first surf lesson.

When is the best time to visit Playa Hermosa?

December to April is the dry season, with near-daily sunshine and the classic Hermosa sunsets. From about November to March the Papagayo winds blow, peaking in February, and the water is a little cooler. The busiest weeks are Christmas to New Year and Semana Santa (Easter week).

May to November is the green season. The hills turn green, rain usually falls in the afternoon, and the beach is even quieter. September and October are the wettest months. Month by month, see the best time to visit Guanacaste.

Getting to Playa Hermosa from Liberia airport

Playa Hermosa is about 30 minutes from Liberia airport, paved all the way via Sardinal. It's one of the shortest transfers in Guanacaste, so it works even if you land late in the afternoon.
