When were these photos taken?
Before January 2012, when Liberia airport opened its new terminal. They show the original terminal building, and you can even spot check-in counters for Continental, Northwest and US Airways, airlines that have since merged into United, Delta and American. The old building is still standing next to the new one, but airline passengers now arrive and depart through the new terminal, which was expanded again in 2017.
So think of this tour as a look back at the small, open-air airport many longtime visitors remember: shaded benches outside, a control tower over the parking lot and a friendly “Bienvenidos a Guanacaste” sign.
What does arriving at Liberia airport look like today?
The new terminal is bigger, but it’s still compact and easy to find your way around. Here’s the route from the plane to the curb:
- Immigration. Have your passport, your return or onward ticket and your first hotel’s address ready.
- Baggage claim. Check the screens for your carousel.
- Customs. Hand in your customs declaration and put your bags through the X-ray.
- Arrivals hall. ATMs, currency exchange, SIM card kiosks and tour and transfer desks are here, just before the exit.
- Outside the doors. Private drivers, shuttle companies and the licensed taxi rank wait in the covered area outside.
It usually takes 30 to 90 minutes from the gate to the curb, longer on busy high-season weekends. Our Liberia airport guide covers every step, plus taxis, Uber, the exit tax and flying home.
How do I get from Liberia airport to my hotel?
The easiest way is a private transfer booked ahead: your driver meets you at arrivals with a sign bearing your name, and up to an hour of stops on the way is included, so you can pick up groceries or cold drinks before you reach the beach.
