When do the flights run?
Both routes fly all year. The difference is how often: United is at least daily in every month, while Southwest drops to weekends in the fall low season and goes daily from November. Southwest's schedule is only loaded to early June 2027 so far, but it flew weekends through the 2025 low season too. The most choice comes from December to April, Guanacaste's dry season.
IAH or Hobby, and where do you land?
United flies from Bush Intercontinental (IAH) and Southwest from Hobby (HOU). Both land at Liberia airport (LIR), branded Guanacaste Airport, 12 km west of Liberia town. It has one passenger terminal: immigration, baggage claim, customs, then out to the curb where drivers, shuttles and taxis wait. The morning departures land around midday to 2:30 p.m.; United's second winter-weekend flight lands in the early evening.
Tips for flying from Houston
- Take the morning flight if you're going far. Landing around midday leaves daylight for Nosara or Sámara. The evening United flight suits Coco, Papagayo, Flamingo or Tamarindo, or a night near the airport.
- Houston is a good connection point. From a city without a nonstop, a United connection through IAH gets you to Liberia daily all year.
- Allow for lines. Gate to curb usually takes 30 to 90 minutes, but on high-season Saturdays and Sundays, when several flights land in the early afternoon, allow 1.5 to 2.5 hours.
- No jet lag. Costa Rica's clock matches Central Standard Time all year: the same as Houston in winter, one hour behind in summer.
